Health insurance when you become self-employed

Checked 7 November 2026 against the sources at the bottom. Health insurance rules change. Confirm the official page before you enroll.

Working for yourself means there is no employer benefits office. It does not, by itself, tell you which plan you can buy or when. Couvertier’s consultation page already says the firm talks with freelancers, contractors, and gig workers who do not have employer benefits. This guide is the part to understand first.

Two different moments

If you are leaving a job and that job’s health plan is ending, HealthCare.gov may treat the loss as a Special Enrollment Period. The timing and the COBRA rules are in losing employer coverage. If you already have other coverage, or you are between open enrollments and nothing qualified has ended, starting an LLC does not invent a Marketplace window. Read the official life-change list before you assume you can enroll this week.

The kinds of coverage people ask about

  • Marketplace plans during open enrollment or a Special Enrollment Period. HealthCare.gov’s pre-existing-condition page is the place to read how Marketplace plans handle medical history. Do not assume an off-Marketplace product follows the same rule.
  • Private plans outside the Marketplace, where a carrier offers them. The firm says it can discuss those options. Underwriting, networks, and effective dates are product-specific. Ask the advisor to name the product type.
  • A spouse’s or domestic arrangement’s employer plan, if one exists. That comparison is often skipped.
  • Dental and vision as add-ons. They are not a substitute for major medical coverage.

Taxes, said narrowly

Self-employed people sometimes deduct health insurance premiums. The IRS publishes that deduction on Form 7206, and the instructions have conditions this page will not restate as a promise. Nothing here is tax advice, and “deduct 100%” is not a line we will print. Take the form to a tax professional. See About Form 7206.

Income that moves around also matters if you are using Marketplace savings. Report changes the way HealthCare.gov tells you to. This site does not calculate a credit.

If you are in Sunrise, Broward, or elsewhere in South Florida, the office can start from your ZIP code. The plan list is still the carrier’s list for that ZIP, not a statewide package. The longer service page is self-employed and 1099 coverage.
